2012 Summer Tour & Field Day

Join your peers for this educational and networking activity. Allied industry vendors will be sharing their newest equipment, packaging, chemicals, seeds, and services.

Event time: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m

Tours at Eshleman Fruit Farm will be from 8 - 11:30 a.m. At 12 p.m. OPGMA will host a brief session during lunch. Lunch will be available for sale onsite. The average cost is $6-$9 per person. CASH ONLY.

 

Attendees can then drive 33 miles to tour OARDC and Buurma Farms. Maps will be available onsite.

 

Eshleman Fruit Farm - Clyde, Ohio
Rich and Betty Eshleman started growing fruit on 40 acres in 1977. Today they grow 6 acres of sweet cherries, 3 acres of plums, 6 acres of apricots, 50 acres of peaches, and 150 acres of apples.

 
New plantings are high density, dwarf trees that grow better quality fruit. The main orchard has trickle irrigation and many of the new varieties. The farm has a 20,000 bushel cold storage and a 25,000 bushel controlled atmosphere storage. Eshleman has a popular "Pick Their Own" fruit service for its customers.

OARDC Muck Crops Agricultural Research Station - Willard, Ohio
It is here, in the heart of fresh market vegetable country, that Ohio State scientists study radishes, parsley, cilantro, green and bulb onions, and many other leaf and root crops.

Buurma Farms Inc - Willard, Ohio
Originally founded in 1896, Buurma Farms has grown to include operations in Ohio, Michigan, and Georgia.

Currently, Buurma Farms harvests over 4,000 acres of produce. Crops grown and sold include radishes, beets, lettuces, parsleys, southern greens, sweet corn, green onions, cilantro, carrots, squash, peppers, and celery. Buurma Farms packs its fresh produce under the "Buurma Farms" and "Holland Brand" labels.
